Dental Hygiene Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Patient Care
Perform dental prophylaxis (cleanings) including scaling and polishing teeth.
Remove calculus, plaque, and stains from teeth using manual, ultrasonic, and air-polishing instruments.
Apply preventive materials such as fluoride and sealants.
Conduct periodontal charting and oral assessments to evaluate gingival and periodontal health.
Administer local anesthesia and/or nitrous oxide (as allowed by state law).
Take and develop dental radiographs (x-rays) to aid in diagnosis.
Assist the dentist in diagnosing and treatment planning by reporting clinical findings.

Patient Education
Educate patients on proper oral hygiene techniques (brushing, flossing, diet).
Provide post-treatment instructions and guidance on at-home care.
Discuss the link between oral health and overall health (e.g., diabetes, heart disease).
Encourage tobacco cessation and other health-related lifestyle changes when appropriate.

Infection Control and Safety
Follow standard precautions and OSHA guidelines to maintain a clean and safe clinical environment.
Sterilize instruments and disinfect operatory between patients.
Ensure proper disposal of hazardous materials and sharps.

Record Keeping and Documentation
Accurately document patient health history, treatment provided, and clinical findings.
Record periodontal measurements and changes in oral health status.
Maintain updated patient charts and electronic records according to practice protocols and legal requirements.

Maintain a professional, respectful demeanor with patients and staff.
Collaborate with the dental team to ensure coordinated, quality care.
